"Yankee" probably comes from the Dutch.

The Dutch had a fort here in Hartford, Connecticut since 1623, long before the English came down from Massachusetts.
Huyshope Ave. and Van Block Ave. have a good selection of amateur pharmacists today.
The Dutch lost their empire as we lose ours today.

I was told that the word 'yankees' comes from Jan Kees, the two most common Dutch names. That's how others called the many Dutch that were living in the New York area. no joke.
