Santouka Ramen - Torrance, CA

Santouka Ramen has locations in Los Angeles, Torrance and Costa Mesa, CA. I had heard Santouka Ramen ranked #2 in the Los Angeles/Orange County area in recent polls. I've eaten here maybe 4 times before over the last 3 years but wasn't quite that sure if it was THAT good. Had to go back and investigate.

CantStayJose and I rolled up to Mitsuwa Market, where this shop does it's thing within the food court. And, ah, we were too early. Just before 11am and the place was still closed.
Starved as all hell, we eyeballed their menu and decided what we were gonna get before getting some appetizers.
Just 20 feet over to the right is this to-go-sushi stand.
We made a quick choice.
Not a better way to start the day! Inari sushi and some unagi rolls. Inari sushi is just a fried tofu pouch with plain sushi rice. Unagi is freshwater eel. Gone in SECONDS. See, one piece already missing:
Whoa, what? It must be 11am because the line already formed before we knew it.
I got the original standard set. Miso ramen with side of rice topped with fixings like green onions, sprouts and other slight seasonings. Also comes with another delicious side, the shoyu-egg, which is a hard boiled egg peeled then simmered in soy sauce.
Jose was quicker to dig in. I barely rattled off a shot and he was already enjoying his ramen. He got the Chashu Ramen (char-siu porked over miso based soup). He got the set with the chashu bowl, which is tender, fatty pork cheek on top of rice with some green onions:
Here's the shoyu-egg. You can't leave without eating these. It's like getting a sandwich and throwing away the pickle, doodles:
The food was great but ranked #2, really? Santouka Ramen? That's a hard call... personally, I'm not sure about this place being the 2nd best in L.A/O.C. If I were in the area again looking for ramen, I'd definitely go back though - for sure. Check it out if you're ever in the area, you won't be disappointed.

Dude! Mitsuwa market is where my wife worked while we were in L.A.! That place rocks! Better even than most of the Japanese markets in Hawaii. My wife worked in the Sanseido book store there, so I made sure they stocked "Vibes". I was trying to get them to stock "Hardcore Chopper" before I left, but I don't know if they ever did.
