So I was back home on Oahu for New Years to see my family. First morning there, we had some business to take care of in Honolulu and ran into Leonard's Bakery. Kapahulu Avenue, where this spot's at, was sort of a backstreet to the huge tourist trap known as Waikiki. Things have changed quite a bit and now Kapahulu seems to be a major street. Traffic was crazier than I remembered but I ain't compaining... yet.
Guess I've been away for a while now... I sure don't remember seeing Portuguese Sausage wraps here before. They looked good though.
So did the standard hot dog wrap.
Leonard's been around since the 1950's and they're famous in Hawaii for a lot of different baked goods. Everyone knows Portuguese sweet bread. Buttered, peanut buttered, toasted, french toasted - whatever, it's all good with sweet bread:
The place was packed with tourists (there was a tourist bus outside) but there's always locals there as well. Most of the people in line were here for one thing though: Malasadas.
Malasadas are a traditional Portuguese pastry. Immigrants (mostly from the Azores off of Portugal) brought these bad boys to Hawaii in the late 1800's. It has also immigrated it's way into my belly hundreds of times ever since I could remember. They are always made fresh then rolled in sugar.
Slightly crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Gotta eat them right away while they're hot. Personally, I think it's no good after an hour. Nice for breakfast.
I'm not sure if it was just me, but I think Leonard's might be over doing their malasadas. I liked them when they weren't made so perfect... they used to be inconsistent in size and shape, even a little crisper on the outside. Oh well, they were still good. Drove a few miles around world famous Diamond Head and found a beach back there my ol'lady used to frequent.
Walked a bit and found a spot with no one around.
Found an opening in the rocks and went for a dip. What's for lunch?
