From what I read he was pretty close to a ranger station, sad and pointless. If only it was looked at more as a lesson in poor decision making, rather than the iconic nature its reached. The movie sucked, though zach Galifinakis as the farm hand who gives him the wrong information which ends up killing the main charecter, Priceless.
He was a kid remember. And this was before the internet, now the entire country and how to navigate it is a known quantity. I think he deserves more credit, it's too bad he didn't get the chance to learn from his mistakes like the rest of us.
