Now I'm going to tell you about somebody I have no clue about. Maybe he wants to be kept anonymous, I dunno, but he was in a hurry to catch up with his friends so we didn't want to hold him up. Never got his name or anything. I actually shot most of these photos on the way into the Mooneyes Show in Irwindale this past weekend. Caught the shot of him with his bike on our way out actually.
What's the big deal... just another FXR, right? No, not really.
Homeboy had a TwinCam in his stock FXR frame and by the looks of it (with the S.E heads), I would guess the engine to be in the 95" to 103" range. Crystal ball says gear drive cams too, but my visions have been a little hazy as of late.
He even had the bagger transmission and linked up. Like I had mentioned before, this puts the oil tank under the tranny. He had the plate the block off the stock "oil tank area" under the seat. All nice, tidy, up-to-date and modern. Especially if you got the strong connects at your local H-D dealer, projects like this Twin Cam FXR could come together pretty smooth without breaking the bank.
Rear shocks mostly likely off of an FXDX. Inverted front end too.
Good job, mystery guy! I'd like to test ride this bike.
I'm sure soooomebody will recognize the dude.

this FXR'S off the hook! fuck!!!!
It's a pretty simple conversion. You have to remove and reposition the cross member in the bottom of the frame to fit the FLT oil bag type tranny in. Take out the FXR bag and fab up a plate and brackets to cover the gap between the frame rails. I replace the bottom crossmember with a piece of 1" round tube locating it in the gap between the FLT oil pan and the engine case to maintain the frame's integrity. You can use the stock FXR foot peg mount on the left side but you have to fab a mount on the right side to accept a Dyna mid control brake/foot peg assy. and fab up a rod to go from the Dyna brake lever to the brake reservoir.
Because the kickstand mounts to the factory crossmember (now gone) you'll need either a weld on one (as this guy has done)or one of the type that bolts onto the swingarm pivot block (kinda ugly, but simple to install). That's it in a nut shell. When you going to start hacking on your FXR, Nelson????
I had mulled over doing the TC/bagger trans combo for a couple of years before I finally scored that 96" engine I have in there now. The new motor is only 8 or 9 months old with 7400 miles on it.
I've seen both ways to get around that cross member. I've seen guys who put tubing across to replace it and I've seen a old dude in WI a while back that chopped up his oil pan to make it fit.
The stock kickstand sucks anyway. I haven't had the stock kickstand on my FXR since '98.
by the way everyone, T-Rod's new silvery sliver of a sled will be sliding into a spot here next week here. Stay tuned!
Charming Mike's FXR...
Not sure I see any advantage to a Twin Cam engine. Despite some things that look better than an Evo on paper, these engines all run hot, and don't seem to respond to performance builds as well as the Evo. If one wants a lot more performance than stock, an aftermarket engine like an S&S based on the Evo architecture would be preferable to a TC in an FXR frame.
