Look out - here come the bikers - again
This was the Sun Herald newspaper on Monday. I thought a lot about whether i even post it here. Do I really want to give voice to yet another 'exposé' that paints a fairy tail picture of our gruesome 'Sons of Anarchy' Melbourne lifestyle. (hold on... he also wrote about the 'Sons of Anarchy' chapter in Melbourne... WTF?)
But it has been bugging me that the writer, Andrew Dowsley, was in touch with a few of us who represent the UMC in Vic on the lead up to the article... to quote Dowsley...
"I’m not going to bullshit you. I’m going to report all sides of the issues -- I don’t have a bias."
"I have interviewed Echo (Police taskforce) on several occasions about what it is up to and have some grounding of Victoria’s one percent culture. I do not think all one percenters are criminals, if that is the concern you have. I also believe there are issues of individual rights that need to be explored"
In the end we didn't trust Dowsley's intentions and said no to an interview or photos... Dowsley had asked for everything from in-depth 'bikers break their silence interviews' to a photo of the BIG 5 – Commos/ Rebels / Finks / Angels / Bandidos - backs to camera... - I guess we can all visualise what the front page would have looked like...
The disturbing thing about this exposé is that it is smartly written. Half truths with disclaimers, heresay and rumour written up as fact. But we are talking about peoples lives here and it would be a breath of fresh air to read something factual, straight and honest.
Dowsley, I know this scene, it is awesome, it is fun ... sure it's not always roses but truth, integrity and honour will always find an open door.
