Wonder why some guys slash cut that back exhaust pipe? To keep debris or smoke off the driver? Maybe it hits the rear slick and pulls it down? Huh? I hope I'm not contemplating this all weekend.

I think your on the right track about blowing the tire smoke back, remember back then the slipped the clutch for traction. Love the looks of the 392 hemis with the distributor behind the intake.

When the motor is set further back in the frame like on the Smirnoff car, the slick can hit the back pipe when it's spinning and expanded out, so they cut the pipe for clearance. Several cars did that. The slicks grow a lot when doing burnouts and spinning down the track.
