The Masque - Hollywood, CA

The Masque was ground zero for the Los Angeles punk rock scene. Located at 1655 N. Cherokee Ave (between Hollywood and Selma) it was home to X, The Germs, The Mau- Mau's, The Weirdos, The Dils, The Skulls, The Controllers and The Go-Go's. As well as being the practice space of one of Long Beach's original punk band, Rhino 39.

The Masque was shut down by the LAPD in 1978 and briefly re-opened in '79. The building was renovated in 2006. The remaining basement walls still display much of the original graffiti. (photos by Michael Yampolsky)
