Monkey Island - Los Angeles, CA

This unusual amusement was located at 3300 Cahuenga Blvd., on the Valley side of the Cahuenga Pass. Monkey Island opened December 9th. 1938. Reportedly hundreds of monkeys roamed an "island" measuring 150 feet long with a 40 foot plastic mountain, surrounded by moats and covered netting.
There were palm trees, swings and billy goats for the monkeys to amuse themselves and a waterfall where they could keep cool. Visitors could feed them peanuts and vegetables.
When the moats were drained in August, 1940 about a hundred monkeys escaped. The owner calmly told police "they'll be back". Most returned at feeding time. It's unclear why or when Monkey Island closed

There's a similar place still in operation in Florida called Monkey Jungle.

I went there when I was about 7, and a capuchin bit my finger.
