New Hardcore Chopper Magazine #45

FINAL COUNTDOWN!

Yes, it's true. Hardcore Chopper Magazine will be put to rest with issue #50, coming up sometime next year. No - Makonabe is NOT going under, it's nothing to do with the economic times or any bullshit like that, but he'll be expanding his motorcycle interests into TWO MORE TITLES. Yes, two more magazines coming your way from Mastermind Makonabe sometime next year (and if we're lucky a book too).

In the meantime check out the cover of #45 (above) which is being worked on as we speak. It won't be hitting the stands for another few weeks.

*Here's a tip - get on eBay now

Grant's Golden Brand

Over the last couple of years, I've had the pleasure of working with Grant Fukuda (of Royal Hawaiian Pool Service) in developing Grant's Golden Brand Pomade.

Whether you admit it or not, every guy uses a little something-something in the age old tradition of looking your best. Daily or maybe just on special occasions, this water soluble supreme pomade has got you covered. No more brown pillow cases and tell your ol'lady she don't gotta worry about you leaving grease spots on the couch - the grease stays in the garage from here on out. Cholo style, spiked, slick black, pompadour or just plain casual, Grant's will not dry up and get crusty like other water soluble pomades and gels. It's pliable and you can comb through it all day. And trust me, there is no other hold like it. Apply to dry hair, washes out easily in the shower. Check out the site: Grant's Golden Brand Pomade.

New Baker Four-Speed

Here's a sneak peak at a new item from Baker Drivetrain, thanks to Trish Horstman.

"Most important difference between this 4-speed trans and a stock H-D is that this one holds oil,"
says James Simonelli.

"It's ball bearing on the main drive gear output, no loose rollers. Main drive gear has internal needle bearings, no bushings. No leaking! Needle bearings in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear too. Improved gear ratios and shifting. Still, a faithful reproduction in every minor detail. N-1 drum also available for this new Baker 4speed AND stock 4speeds - what does this mean? Hand shift like this: N-1-2-3-4"

What?

Really?

Hardcore Chopper Magazine #41

Definitely a local legend around these parts is Painter Joe of Williams Motors on the cover of the new HCC Magazine, Japan. Just a sneak preview of what's to come.

The magazine is still in production and will be finished very shortly. The HCC staff has been on the usual 22 hour work day again since it's deadline time (napping at the office) to get the latest news/features into each new issue. Makonabe sometimes won't go home for 2 weeks straight during deadlines.

I wanted to personally thank Dennis Skog of HAMC SFV for helping us out with this proper feature! Aloha and Mahaloz!

Bye Bye Buell

Today, Thursday, October 15, 2009, an emotional Erik Buell announced that the Buell Motorcycle Co. will no longer produce motorcycles.
This is a very sad casualty of the bad economy. Buell has produced some very nice motorcycles over the years. Buell is the only American made sport bike going against the “Big Boys” from overseas. It was a good run & we can only hope that Buell will someday return to it’s rightful place of prominence.

RIP
Brendan Mullen dies at 60; founder of influential Masque punk rock club.
The Hollywood venue, which opened in 1977, quickly became a crucible for emerging, anarchic L.A. groups like the Weirdos and the Germs and later X and the Go-Go's.

S&S Cycle Presents

Submitted by Howard Kelly:

My first book - and possibly one of the coolest coffee table books I have seen — is about to be released through Motorbooks International. It is called S&S Cycle presents Today’s Top Custom Bike Builders and it is based on the S&S 50th. With a forward by Jay Leno, the rest of the book is all my words on the event, the history of S&S and a look at all 50 bikes. When I sat down to write the book I went back to the writing style that served me best, being me.

Back in the Hot Bike/Street Chopper days when I wrote, people used to tell me that when they read the mags, it was like I was sitting there talking with them about a bike as we looked at it together. Same deal. No fancy words, no wild stories about bros in the wind, bars or fantasies about life on the road, just a touch of the builder’s personality and cool stuff about the bikes. I honestly dig the book a lot and get nothing if it sells like hot cakes. I cut the deal to be an all S&S deal since I worked there at the time, but hey, it’s my first book and it came out great.

Both Jeff Wright’s bike and ChopperDave’s bike came out great. The layout on the pages is perfect for chasing down your favorite builders from the 50th and having them sign it.

The new issue of Vice had come in and I saw an ad that made my world come to a screeching halt. Any time I see anything put out by the 4AD record label in the 80's and early 90's, I tend to put on my brain-brakes and do long squirrley skids.
Oh, I passed on the Bad Brains shoes. The Slayer shoes. The KISS shoes. They didn't even phase me, whateeever. Love the bands, don't need the shoes. In fact I been wearing the same dirty ass oily pair Christian Hosoi high tops Daniel-san Takahashi gave me 2 years ago.
But ooooh, VANS had to go out and make shoes of THE PIXIES. Now that changes everything! Fuck! Now I gotta go find them. Where Is My Mind?

Back In the Saddle

Ok, I've been forced to sit on this one for about a year now. Dave Grohl is back behind the kit with his new band Them Crooked Vultures! Dave will be joined by fellow Vultures Josh Homme (QOTSA) and John Paul Jones (If you don't know who he is stop reading now) Sunday night (8/9/09) at their their first and only scheduled US show at The Metro in Chicago!
They just wrapped up two weeks of rehearsals and let me tell you, it's fucking GOOD!

Hi Bond Modified Narrow Vista Bars

Rico Fodrey fell in love with how perfect they look on a striped down bike with narrow front end. As a true rider, Rico knows the right feel & look when it’s found. After endless request for more, Rico talked his buddy Mike into teaming up for a limited production run.

The bars are made in both 1” or 7/8" Raw steel & 1" or 7/8” stainless, they feature 8" center width, 11" rise and 30" wide end to end for the option to cut them down on a striped bike. A 3 1/2" pullback keeps them between baby ape's & tall drags.

Retail: $ 90 raw steel & $100 stainless, you polish or chrome.

NEWS

Viola, Wisconsin. S&S Cycle announces the acquisition of certain assets of Crane Cams Inc. Those assets include the inventory, intellectual property, and trademarks for all Crane automotive and motorcycle electronic products and for Crane motorcycle valve train products. The intellectual property portion includes designs, drawings, and cam profiles. Crane automotive valve train products are not included in this acquisition. Crane Cams was founded in 1953, and like S&S Cycle, founded in 1958, it has become a respected and iconic brand in the high performance industry.

S&S intends to continue to sell Crane products through the same distributors and dealers who have sold them in the past. To that end, they will establish a new facility in Daytona Beach, Florida to manage the business and provide customer service and technical support. This new facility will be staffed by many of the same personnel that Crane customers have worked with in the past, providing as seamless a transition as possible. While there may be some shortages of product in the near future, the Crane/S&S team will be working hard to fill back orders and meet future demand for Crane ignitions and motorcycle valve train components.

Since the acquisition does not include the Crane facility or equipment, manufacturing of valve train products will be moved to the S&S manufacturing facility in Viola, Wisconsin. S&S CEO George Smith comments: “The addition of this product line is a natural fit for our current in-house cam manufacturing capabilities as our equipment and processes are state of the art. We’re also excited that the highly successful Crane motorcycle and automotive electronics line is included with this acquisition. This will further strengthen S&S Cycle in the electronics field by providing additional expertise to improve our product offerings in late model ignitions, among other things."
